BLOUNTVILLE — Sullivan County’s plan to sell the old Cedar Grove Elementary School property might be held back instead of skipping ahead later this month.
Some county commissioners who represent the Bloomingdale area where the property is located said Thursday they want the full commission to reject all bids received and start over.
Commissioners John Crawford and Bill Kilgore said they’ve met with residents of the area as well as with members — and former members — of both churches that have sought to buy the property.
Crawford and Kilgore said residents don’t want the school to become a facility for troubled youth, as proposed by one church, and that members of both congregations have expressed doubt that either church can financially support their competing visions for the site.
Crawford said that when the issue comes for a potential vote by the full commission on Sept. 16, he will be opposed and will ask the governing body to instead reject both bids and begin a process to determine, with community input, what is the best future use of the property.
