DUFFIELD — A Kingsport man was killed following a single-vehicle wreck Monday on U.S. Route 23 in Lee County, according to Virginia State Police.
The driver of the car was identified by the VSP as Jeffery A. Stapleton, 58, of Kingsport.
According to VSP spokeswoman Corinne Geller, the accident occurred on Labor Day at 5:02 p.m., roughly a mile from where U.S. Route 23 intersects with State Road 900 in Lee County.
Stapleton was reportedly driving a 1999 Saturn SL southbound on Route 23 when he ran off the right side of the roadway.
As it left the road, the car reportedly struck a culvert, a mailbox and then a highway sign. Stapleton's vehicle then hit an embankment before overturning into the roadway.
Geller said Stapleton was not wearing a seatbelt when the wreck occurred and was thrown from the vehicle.
Stapleton died at the scene of the accident, Geller said.
The investigation of the crash, which is being handled by VSP Trooper W.W. Williams, is ongoing.
