Kingsport Police Department Citizens Academy taking applications

KINGSPORT — Ever wondered what it would feel like to be a police officer? Ever wanted to understand what it is police officers do? 

If you answered yes to those questions, then the Kingsport Police Department Citizens Academy may be for you.

The academy is open to anyone 18 years old and up who resides or works within the city limits.

Classes are scheduled to begin Oct. 7, and will then meet two times each week on Monday and Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m. for the next four weeks. The final class is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 29.

The deadline to submit an application for the academy will be Friday, Sept. 13, at 5 p.m. If you have previously applied, you still need to submit a new application, according to the KPD. 

Each class is expected to last approximately two to three hours.

Sessions will include a mixture of classroom presentations, demonstrations and hands-on activities.

Topics will include: 

1) Introduction to KPD, Justice Center Tour 

2) Collision and DUI Investigations 

3) Crime Scene Investigations 

4) EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) 

5) The Police K-9 

6) Traffic Stops and Building Searches 

7) Defensive Tactics and the Use of Force 

8) SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics)
