Mariners pound K-Mets

PULASKI, Va. — The Kingsport Mets’ short run atop the Appalachian League West Division came to a crashing halt on Sunday after a 15-0 loss to the Pulaski Mariners at Calfee Park.

The good news for the K-Mets is they still hold a two-game lead on Johnson City and are up 2½ games over Elizabethton for a playoff spot. Five games are left in the regular season.

On Sunday, Kingsport’s high-powered offense — second only to Pulaski in the league — managed just one hit off the Mariners’ pitching staff. The K-Mets (35-27) struck out 17 times.

Left-hander Eddie Campbell (3-3) tossed six dominant innings, allowing just one hit and a walk while striking out 12. Wander Marte and Isliexel Gonzalez combined for three perfect innings to finish the job.

Pulaski (40-23) pounded out 13 hits, led by Toby DeMello’s 3-for-4 effort. Jeffrey Zimmerman had a three-run double and homered with one on to record five RBIs. Dan Kemp and Gabrial Franca knocked in two runs each.

The Mariners sent 12 batters to the plate in a seven-run fifth that put the game out of reach.

Richie Rodriguez singled in the sixth to break up Campbell’s no-hit bid.

Kingsport starter Martires Arias (1-7) was yanked after giving up a pair of runs in the second inning. The next three relievers were shelled for 13 runs over the subsequent 4 1-3 innings.

The teams will get together again Monday for the second game of the series.
