Former Fort Campbell officer cleared of charge

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The former head of the sex harassment program at Fort Campbell has been cleared of charges stemming from a domestic dispute.

But Lt. Col. Darin Hass (HAHZ'), who was immediately removed from the position after his arrest, told The Tennessean that the situation damaged his reputation and his career.

"It destroyed my focus, at least from a military standpoint, which is sad, because I really enjoyed what I was doing," he said.

Hass was charged in May with violating a protective order and stalking after his ex-wife filed a complaint against him.

Haas' attorney, Stacy Turner, said authorities voluntarily dismissed the charges after a meeting revealed details of a contentious divorce. The judge issued an order to dismiss the charges on Wednesday.

In a separate ruling earlier this month, the judge said the ex-wife did not have enough evidence to have a protective order against Hass.

"In my opinion, these charges were abuse of the process to gain an upper hand in the divorce proceedings," Turner said.

The ex-wife's attorney, Mark Olson, blamed technical reasons for the dismissal of the protective order.

"An order of protection requires a finding that there was an immediate threat before the order is issued. In this situation, this gentlemen has presented difficulties to her — the problem was, it did not occur immediately before the issuance of the order," attorney Mark Olson said. "My client wants to be left alone."

According to court records, Haas sent threatening and sexually charged messages to his ex-wife nearly a year before she requested the protective order.

Haas says he will have to fight to restore his good name.

"I don't know if I'm going to be able to do that," he said. "When you Google me, you don't find anything good."

His retirement from the Army is expected to become final in December.

Haas says he is engaged and planning a wedding and looks forward to the future.
