Virginia-Wise announces two new staff hires

WISE — The Virginia-Wise athletic department  announced two recent staff hires Tuesday.

Southwest Virginia native Bill Rutledge was hired as an assistant athletic trainer.  Renee Renz, who was a graduate assistant at Southern Arkansas,  has been hired as an assistant women’s basketball coach.

Rutledge earned a bachelor’s of science degree in athletic training from Radford University before recently completing a master’s of art degree in kinesiology from East Tennessee State University.

While at ETSU, Rutledge served as the athletic trainer for the men’s soccer program.  In that role, he gained extensive experience in hip labral injuries, surgeries and rehabilitation.  Additionally, Rutledge worked with the ETSU Soccer Academy where he dealt with youth soccer injuries and provided guidance on heat related illness during athletic activity.

Prior to his time at ETSU, Rutledge worked with the men’s soccer, women’s field hockey, softball, and baseball programs at Radford.  While at Radford, he worked with various healthcare professionals including those in the physical therapy, orthopedics, ophthalmology, and primary care fields.

Renz will serve as an assistant coach under Cavaliers women’s head coach Kristin Kunzman.

While at Southern Arkansas, Renz assisted in skill development, film exchange and breakdown, scouting, the recruitment of prospective student-athletes, monitoring student-athlete academic success, organized and ran summer camps, and planned team travel.

The new coach earned a bachelor’s of science degree in kinesiology from Texas Woman’s University before adding a master’s of education from Southern Arkansas University.
