Cuccinelli receives backing of Va. police organization

SPRINGFIELD, Va. — Virginia Republican candidate for governor, state Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, has been endorsed by the Virginia Police Benevolent Association (PBA).

“The Virginia PBA is proud to endorse Ken Cuccinelli for Virginia governor. Ken is committed to making strong, effective law enforcement a priority in his campaign and we look forward to working with him into the future,” said Virginia PBA President Joe Woloszyn. “A vote for Ken Cuccinelli is a vote for the men and women of law enforcement and the citizens we serve.”

Cuccinelli said the group’s endorsement is “particularly meaningful to me” in part because of his role as state attorney general.

“I work with law enforcement every day and know their concerns about officer safety, bureaucracy at a state level, and obtaining the tools they need to keep Virginians safe, especially with the most vulnerable in our society,” he said.

“In the attorney general’s office we’ve worked with law enforcement across the commonwealth to crack down on human traffickers, child predators, gang leaders and scam artists. Through that experience, I have gained a firsthand understanding of what our police officers need to more effectively do their jobs.”

Cuccinelli said he was “honored to have the PBA’s endorsement for governor and I look forward to continuing to work closely with the organization over the next four years to make our communities safer and more attractive to economic development.”

The Virginia Division of the Southern States PBA met on Aug. 10 to vet Virginia political candidates with in-person interviews, including Cuccinelli and his Democratic opponent, Terry McAuliffe.

The group also interviewed Mark Herring and Mark Obenshain, both state senators running for state attorney general in the November elections. The Virginia PBA endorsed Democrat Herring over Republican Obenshain.

“(Herring) is committed to making strong, effective law enforcement a priority in his campaign and we look forward to working with him in the future,” Woloszyn said.

The Virginia PBA also endorsed Republican E.W. “Earl” Jackson for lieutenant governor over Democrat Ralph Northam. Jackson attended the group’s Aug. 10 candidate screening process while Northam sent a campaign representative.
