Hokies, Nittany Lions to meet on gridiron

BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech is going to become very familiar with the Big Ten’s brand of football over the next decade.

The Hokies and Penn State have agreed to play a home-and-home series beginning in 2022, Virginia Tech athletic director Jim Weaver announced Wednesday, making the Nittany Lions the fourth team from the Big Ten with home-and-home series on to the Hokies’ future schedules.

Virginia Tech also will play Ohio State in 2014-15, Wisconsin in 2019-20 and Michigan in 2020-21.

Barring a bowl matchup in the interim, the Hokies and Nittany Lions will meet for the first time at Lane Stadium on Sept. 17, 2022, and again in State College, Pa., on Sept. 16 the following season.

“I am very pleased that we have been able to negotiate a home-and-home football series with Penn State,” Weaver said. “I think this will be a series that our fans will look forward to.”

The series figures to have special significance for Weaver. He earned bachelor’s (1967) and master’s degrees (1968) from Penn State, played center and linebacker for the Nittany Lions and was an assistant coach there from 1969-72.

Despite having campuses located less than 375 miles apart, Virginia Tech and Penn State have never met on the gridiron. The Hokies have a cumulative record of 28-10 against other teams from the Keystone State: Temple (14-3), Pittsburgh (7-5), Villanova (5-0), Penn (1-1), Bucknell (0-1) and Waynesburg (1-0).
