It has been a Bristol institution for over a century. It actually looks like an old department store, with new and previously-owned merchandise. There is a wide selection of items for sale, such as musical instruments, sporting goods, game systems, jewelry, electronics, and firearms.
Uncle Sam’s was established in 1908. Charles and Charlotte Brown bought the business in 1981, and it is now managed by their daughter, Cheryl Brown. After having outgrown several homes, Uncle Sam’s moved to the old F.W. Woolworth’s Dime Store in 1991.
“One reason you see so many different things in this store,” says Tammy Baines, an employee of 11 years, “is because we provide so many services: small to larger loans, pawn, consignment, new, and estate, etc… Sometimes loans are difficult to get these days, so we are like a lifeline for so many people who just need a little help now and then.”
Even though the business is over 100 years old, it has a presence on the “world wide web.”
“We do a very good online business, especially around the holidays,” says Baines.
“People come here when they’re in town for a race or concert, and when they return home, from all over the world, they remember us and get in touch with us via our website.”
Uncle Sam’s is located at 614 State Street in Bristol, Tenn. They are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. They are closed Sundays and Wednesdays. To reach them, call 423-764-3331 or visit http://www.unclesamsonline.com.
You can also enjoy an old-fashioned lunch at the Memory Lane Café on site, at the old Woolworth’s lunch counter, while you shop.comments powered by Disqus
