BLACKSBURG — Frank Beamer is giving his Hokies an unscheduled day off.
Virginia Tech opened preseason football camp last week and followed with seven intense days of practice, so Beamer decided to give his team Monday off. Several Hokies are banged up.
Among the players who should benefit from the day of rest are linebacker D.J. Coles (knee), Tariq Edwards (leg), tailback Tony Gregory (knee), receiver Charley Meyer (hamstring) and LB Ronny Vandyke (shoulder).
Also on Sunday, Beamer announced on his website that sophomore cornerback Donaldven Manning is transferring to another school.
Virginia Tech, which opens the season Aug. 31 against Alabama in Atlanta, resumes practice Tuesday evening.
The team’s second open scrimmage is set for Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Lane Stadium.
