Four suspects in Scott crimes arrested in S.C.

GATE CITY — Four Scott County residents are awaiting extradition back to Southwest Virginia after they were reportedly arrested in South Carolina earlier this week in a stolen car.

The suspects,  who waived extradition,  were identified this week by the Scott County Sheriff’s Office as Cody Allen Peak, Trevor Wayne Hardy, Dakota Lee Dorton and Jerome Wade Akers.

According to Scott County Sheriff John Puckett, authorities received a report on Monday that a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier was reported stolen from the Dungannon area and they began their investigation after the vehicle’s owner gave investigators the names of three possible suspects.

Puckett said the vehicle was entered as stolen into the National Crime Information Center.

Roughly five minutes after entering the information into the database, Puckett said investigators received a call from authorities in Dorchester County, S.C., informing them that the vehicle had been impounded there as the result of a traffic stop.

The vehicle was reportedly stopped for a traffic violation shortly after noon on Monday on Interstate 95 South in South Carolina.

Puckett said all three individuals named by the car’s owner were located inside the vehicle, as well as a fourth person who was not suspected in the theft but wanted instead on outstanding warrants in Scott County.

The officer who stopped the vehicle in South Carolina said three of the suspects fled the scene of the traffic stop after information they provided to authorities there “failed to add up.”  The fourth individual found in the car reportedly stayed with the vehicle.

Puckett said the three suspects that fled were apprehended a short time later walking along a roadway near St. George, S.C.

All four of the suspects were taken to the Dorchester County Jail after being taken into custody.

While at the jail, Puckett said three of the individuals were positively identified as suspects in the car theft thanks to information provided by the Scott County Sheriff’s Office.

Puckett said all four individuals waived extradition back to Scott County on Wednesday, where they will face felony charges.

The suspects also face charges by the Saint George Police Department.

Puckett said all four would likely be picked up and returned to Scott County sometime next week.
