Former K-Mets standout gets a birthday call to remember

Another former Kingsport Mets' standout is headed to the show.

Late Monday night, the New York Mets announced the first big league callup for infielder Wilmer Flores. The former shortstop turned third baseman was just 16 when he arrived in Kingsport, and quickly became a crowd favorite at Hunter Wright Stadium during the 2008 Appalachian League season. He continued to wow fans in Kingsport, hitting .310 on the season with 8 home runs and 41 RBIs, until a late-season promotion to Brooklyn.

It's a heck of a birthday celebration for Flores, who turns 22 today (Aug. 6).

Flores is being recalled from Las Vegas, where he is hitting .322 with 15 home runs and 86 RBI. He played third base for Las Vegas on Monday night and is now en route to New York, the team announced on Twitter. Flores is the Mets’ No. 5-rated prospect in the system, according to MLB.com. A corresponding roster move has yet to be announced. Reports indicate Flores will likely play third base with David Wright on the disabled list. However, he could see time at shortstop, second base and first base.
