Attempted arson at Cherokee Restaurant under investigation

ROGERSVILLE — The Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office responded to a complaint this past Thursday of an attempted arson at the Cherokee Restaurant south of Rogersville near Cherokee High School.

Owner Rebecca Poindexter told the HCSO that the fire was apparently set to the electric meter box on the back of the building sometime after 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31; and before 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1 when an employee walked to the back of the building and noticed the burn damage.

Deputy Wesley Seals stated in his report he noticed burn marks on the vinyl wall siding, grass, and on the meter box. This was this second incident at the restaurant this year.

On March 17 Poindexter arrived at the restaurant located at 2928 Route 66 to discover that  window in the back of the building had been broken out, and the inside of the restaurant was ransacked.

Water lines had been pulled down and water was running from the ceiling all over the floor; milk was poured all over the floor; and freezers were opened to ruin food.

The HCSO Detectives Division is investigating both incidents.

Anyone with information is asked to call the HCSO at (423) 272-4848.
