GREENEVILLE — In a showdown of the top two teams in the Appalachian League West Division, the Kingsport Mets were sent home with a stinging 17-1 loss to the Greeneville Astros on Sunday.
The K-Mets (25-18) had a chance to pull to within a game of Greeneville (28-15) in the standings, but ran into a team coming off a series loss to division bottom dweller Bristol and wanted to get back on track.
Greeneville broke open the game with seven runs in the third inning, highlighted by Marc Wik’s three-run triple and Ariel Ovando’s home run with two on.
Wik led the Astros with a 4-for-5 effort at the plate. Tyler White and Juan Santana also homered and knocked in three and four runs, respectively.
Michael Bernal homered in the sixth for the K-Mets’ lone run.
Kingsport is off Monday before hosting Pulaski for a three-game series beginning Tuesday.
The Mets travel to Greeneville again on Friday for their final series against the Astros this season.
