YPSILANTI, Mich. — Rogersville’s Harper Russell won a gold medal Thursday in the 1,500 meters at the AAU Junior Olympic Games being held at Eastern Michigan University.
Russell, representing the Slipstream Track & Field Club, ran a winning time of 4:56.73 in the 13-year-old girls division.
On Wednesday, Russell just missed a medal, as she finished ninth in the 800 meter finals with a time of 2:21.21.
Hannah Rhodes from Greeneville earned the Slipstream club another medal with a fourth place finish in the 17-18 girls 2,000 steeplechase (8:05.25). She came in 10th in the 1500m (5:05.12).
Kingsport’s Lauren Church, competing in the 13-year-old division, also garnered a medal, finishing seventh in the javelin with a throw of 55-feet-9 inches.
The competition continues through Saturday.
