BRISTOL, Va. — Former Sullivan South standout Nick Cohen was recently named the golf coach at Virginia Intermont.
Cohen, who graduated from South in 2005, played at Tennessee Wesleyan his freshman year before transferring to East Tennessee State.
“I always had a passion for golf and wanted a job in the business,” said Cohen.
When the VI golf coaching position became available recently, Cohen applied.
“I got an interview and then they offered me the job,” added Cohen. “It’s all been so unexpected.”
Cohen’s first official day on the job was Monday, July 22.
“I’ve already learned a great deal. There’s so much that goes into being a college golf coach.
“Besides recruiting you have to make sure the players are keeping their grades up, you have to schedule practice, tournaments and plan fundraisers.
“The coaching part is really just a small piece of a very big puzzle,” added Cohen.
While just in his second week on the job, Cohen is already realizing what a great opportunity this is.
“I’m having a blast,” said Cohen. “I never thought something like this would have been possible. But I really enjoy what I’m doing.”
An accomplished player himself, Cohen has runnerup finishes this summer at both the Graysburg Hills Amateur and Tri-Cities Amateur championship. He finished fourth in the East Tennessee Amateur.
