Woman receives items purchased with stolen credit card from online dating friend

CHURCH HILL — A Carters Valley woman told the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office last week that a man she met recently on an Internet dating service  apparently sent her a Vermont Teddy Bear and other items that were purchased with a stolen credit card.

The 23-year-old woman told HCSO Cpl. Chad Britton Friday that recently she has been texting and emailing a person known to her as Shannon Hendrick, whom she met on a dating website called Plenty of Fish.

“(The woman) stated that text and emails were the only forms of communications used,” Britton stated in his report. “(She) said that she received a 15 inch ‘Thank you Bear’ from the Vermont Teddy Bear company from Shannon sometime in May, as well as another package containing products from Bed, Bath and Beyond.”

Britton added, however, that the woman had recently received a letter from Vermont Teddy Bear Company stating that the bear she received was paid for with a stolen credit card, and she needed to return it or face legal action.

The woman told Britton that Shannon Hendrick requested that she forward the other products she received to an address in St. Albans, N.Y.

“(The woman) said that she had already shipped the items which consisted of four towels, a bottle of men’s cologne, and some lithium shavers prior to receiving the letter from Vermont Teddy Bear to return the bear,” Britton said.

She also asked that a report be filed with the HCSO in case future packages arrive or a problem arises from the order she forwarded from Bed, Bath and Beyond.
