Popeye's Louisiana Chicken is planning to open a new restaurant at 1645 East Stone Drive, across the street from McDonald's on the site of an old Bank of Tennessee building.

According to preliminary building plans submitted to the city of Kingsport last week, the proposed restaurant will be just under 2,700 square feet, include a drive-thru window and be large enough for 60 guests. The company intends to demolish the existing building to accommodate the restaurant, a building official said on Tuesday.

The restaurant will be under the company's "Louisiana Kitchen" trade name and be similiar to the one that opened in Johnson City this week.

Founded in New Orleans in 1972, Popeye's is a chain of fried chicken, fast-food restaurants with more than 2,000 locations in more than 40 states and the District of Columia and over 22 countries worldwide. According to the company's website, Popeye's distinguishes itself with a unique "New Orleans" style menu featuring spicy chicken, chicken tenders, fried shrimp and other seafood, as well as jambalaya, red beans and rice and other regional items.
