K-Mets blank Twins to extend win streak to 7

ELIZABETHTON — In what has become a team staple the past several weeks, the Kingsport Mets received another strong and deep pitching performance from their starter in a 4-0 win over the Elizabethton Twins on Monday at Joe O’Brien Field.

This time it was 6-foot-7 Dominican right-hander Martires Arias (1-4), who delivered seven shutout innings. He gave up four hits and two walks while striking out seven to earn his first win.

Luis Rengel and Ricardo Jacquez each worked an inning in relief with two strikeouts apiece.

Kingsport (23-14) got on the board in the first when Yeixon Ruiz led off with a single, advanced to second base on a hit batter and to third on a Victor Cruzado single before being knocked home by Joe Tuschak.

Ruiz scored on wild pitches in the second and sixth innings and Jonathan Leroux came home on a sacrifice fly by Richie Rodriguez in the third to account for all of Kingsport’s runs.

Jeff McNeil finished 3-for-3 with a double, and Ruiz and Tuschak added two hits each. Rodriguez, Ruiz and McNeil both stole bases, and McNeil was hit twice by pitches.

The K-Mets will try to extend their winning streak to eight Tuesday in the second game of the series at Elizabethton (18-18). First pitch is set for 7 o’clock.

EXTRA INNINGS: Kingsport took over the Appalachian League’s top team batting spot at .267. Pulaski (.261) is second ... McNeil (.350) and Cruzado (.344) are first and third, respectively, in individual batting average.
