BRISTOL, Va. — The white-hot Kingsport Mets beat the Bristol White Sox 7-5 on Saturday night at DeVault Memorial Stadium to continue their winning tear in Appalachian League play.
But the best thing that happened to the K-Mets on Saturday took place 50 miles to the southwest.
Greeneville was swept in a doubleheader against Pulaski, allowing Kingsport to pull within two games of the West Division- leading Astros.
The K-Mets (21-14) got on the board first against the White Sox after Bradley Marquez led off the game with a single and was knocked home by Victor Cruzado.
Kingsport scored three more runs in the fifth inning thanks to doubles by Zach Mathieu, Yeixon Ruiz and designated hitter Jonathan Leroux.
Amed Rosario tripled to bring home Richie Rodriguez and Bradley Marquez knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
Leroux doubled again to lead off the seventh and came home on a wild pitch to add an insurance run.
Leroux went 3-for-5, all doubles, and knocked in a pair of runs to lead the K-Mets at the plate. Ruiz, Rodriguez and Amed Rosario added two hits each.
Patrick Palmeiro was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs for Bristol (10-24).
Kingsport ace Chris Flexen (4-1) worked seven innings for the win, yielding three runs on five hits and no walks while striking out four. Ricardo Jacquez completed a perfect 1 1-3 innings with three strikeouts to earn his fourth save.
The K-Mets, who beat the Sox 7-0 in the series opener Friday night, go for the sweep today at 6 p.m. before continuing their road trip at Elizabethton on Monday.
