Donation helps fund Second Harvest Mobile Pantry program

KINGSPORT — UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Tennessee donated $50,000 on Friday to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee to fight hunger through Second Harvest’s Mobile Pantry program.

UnitedHealthcare presented the donation at a Second Harvest Mobile Pantry food distribution event at Dogwood Terrace Apartments.

Tennessee Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey (R-Blountville) and state Rep. Jon Lundberg (R-Bristol) were present for the donation.

The event was in support of UnitedHealthcare’s “Do Good. Live Well” employee volunteer initiative to prevent hunger, diabetes and obesity.

UnitedHealthcare is providing funding for 71 events, with an average of 60 individuals at each distribution, through Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee targeting rural and urban communities. The partnership will provide food assistance to more than 4,200 hungry children, families and seniors.

“We’re going to be able to reach unserved areas that don’t have a pantry, that don’t have a soup kitchen, and reach elderly folks who can’t get to us because of their disabilities,” Second Harvest Executive Director Rhonda Chafin said at the event. “We have families and seniors who need assistance every day, and through this donation we are going to be able to help those individuals.”
