De Leon homer powers K-Mets over Cardinals for second straight win

JOHNSON  CITY — A couple days off this week was just what Kingsport needed.

The Mets edged the Johnson City Cardinals 5-3 on Friday evening at Cardinal Park to claim their second win in a row.

Tuesday was a scheduled day off for the Appalachian League and Wednesday’s slate of games was canceled because of rain.

The K-Mets opened the series in Johnson City by blasting the Cardinals 20-4 on Thursday night, and Friday’s defeat left Johnson City with a six-game losing streak.

Jeyckol De Leon’s first home run of the season was the difference in the game.

With Kingsport trailing 2-1 entering the fifth inning, Champ Stuart led off with a double and came home on a Jon Leroux fielder’s choice to tie the game.

Singles by Jeff McNeil and Victor Cruzado brought De Leon to the plate, and he deposited his three-run shot over the left-field fence.

Cruzado finished 3-for-5.

The Cardinals threatened in the ninth inning with runners on first and second and one out, but successive infield outs ended the threat.

Mets starter Corey Oswalt and Yoan Gonzalez (1-2) combined to pitch eight innings and allow 10  hits. Robert Coles pitched the ninth for his first save.

Lance Jeffries and Brett Wiley had two hits and an RBI apiece for Johnson City. Luis Perdomo (1-1) took the loss.

The series continues tonight at 6 p.m.

Kingsport (5-9) returns home Sunday for a doubleheader against Greeneville, starting at 5 p.m.
