DUFFIELD — Authorities are investigating a fire that destroyed a trailer near Duffield Tuesday afternoon whose owner is reportedly overseas serving in the military.
The Duffield Volunteer Fire Department said the fire was reported at 155 Geese Drive near Natural Tunnel State Park just after 4:30 p.m.
The first of six fire trucks responded to a blaze roughly 10 minutes later to find the residence fully involved in flames.
Duffield Fire Chief Roger Carter said the trailer had its power shut off for several months since its owner is not currently living there.
Family members reportedly told fire officials that the trailer's owner is serving with the military in Afghanistan. The man's branch of service was not available as of Tuesday night.
Because the trailer had its power cut off, Carter said foul play has not been eliminated as a possible cause.
"We're still investigating the cause of it," Carter said. "There was no power on it and there hadn't been any storms in they area today. So we don't know yet."
Carter said he plans to meet with the Scott County Sheriff's Office soon to discuss the investigation.
Carter said a family member would likely inform the owner of the residence about the fire.
The blaze was the second home fire in two days that crews from the Duffield and Gate City volunteer fire departments were dispatched to.
A home was destroyed Sunday near Natural Tunnel when a fire began in its kitchen before spreading to the rest of the structure.
The exact cause of that fire is also under investigation.
