Scott County teen, 15, leads police on chase in stolen truck

GATE CITY — Scott County authorities arrested a 15-year-old boy earlier this week after he allegedly led police on a pursuit in a stolen farm truck.

According to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred early Monday morning on Veterans Memorial Highway between Gate City and Fort Blackmore.

The juvenile, who has not been identified by authorities because of his age, allegedly was driving a stolen farm-use truck northbound on Veterans Memorial when a Scott County Sheriff’s Office deputy got behind him and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

Instead of pulling over, the boy allegedly fled in the truck, sparking a pursuit that lasted several minutes.

The chase reportedly ended when the juvenile crashed the vehicle into an embankment before running from the scene of the wreck on foot.

Scott County Sheriff John Puckett said deputies spent several hours Monday morning searching the woods near the wreck for the teen but were unable to immediately locate him.

The juvenile reportedly was taken into custody later Monday morning after he was spotted eating at the Front Porch Store and Deli in Fort Blackmore.

Authorities said the boy was attempting to run away from home and go to an acquaintance’s house near Fort Blackmore when he stole the truck from a farm located in the Hiltons area.

Following his arrest, the teen was taken to the Highlands Juvenile Detention Center in Bristol, Va., where he is currently in custody.

Authorities have not indicated what charges are pending against the boy. The case is being handled in Scott County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
