BIG STONE GAP — One person was killed and another seriously injured Friday during a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 23 near Big Stone Gap on Friday.
At 11:14 a.m., Virginia State Police Trooper C.D. Greear was called to the scene at the 35-mile marker in the Powell Valley area.
The VSP reported a 2003 Chevrolet Tracker was traveling south on U.S. Route 23 when it ran off the right side of the highway and struck a guardrail. The Tracker then crossed back over the southbound lanes, went across the median and struck head-on a northbound 2011 Chevrolet Traverse.
The impact of the crash caused the Tracker to continue off the highway where it overturned and came to rest against the guardrail. The Traverse spun around and came to rest in the northbound lanes of U.S. Route 23.
The VSP said the driver of the Tracker, Teddy G. Chandler Jr., 54, of Big Stone Gap, was not wearing a seat belt. He was partially ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.
The driver of the Traverse, Laura I. Greene, 68, of Wise, was flown to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport for treatment of life-threatening injuries. Greene was wearing a seat belt.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, the VSP said.
