Michael Isaac McMurray, 48
A Church Hill man has been arrested for allegedly firing a gun at the occupied porch of his mother-in-law — also his next door neighbor — during an altercation with her boyfriend.
Police report five individuals, including a one-year-old child, were on the porch that he shot at, prompting four counts of reckless endangerment and one count of aggravated assault.
According to a Hawkins County Sheriff's Office arrest report, shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday deputies responded to 195 Okalona Road, lot 17. Witnesses told police that Michael Isaac McMurray, 48, of lot 15, had been engaged in an "altercation" with a male resident.
HCSO Det. Jeff Greer says police aren't sure about what fueled the dispute with the other man, who is dating McMurray's mother-in-law. Both the mother-in-law and her boyfriend live next to McMurray at lot 17.
The initial incident between the men reportedly occurred at McMurray's residence, with the other man then walking back to his home. McMurray is alleged to have soon followed, firing a shot at the man as he was on his porch.
Police say three additional adults and the child were also on the porch at the time the gun was fired.
During subsequent interviews with investigators McMurray allegedly consented to a search of his home, where police located a .38-calber revolver in a dresser drawer. The chamber reportedly contained four live rounds and one that was spent.
McMurray was arrested and transported to the Hawkins County jail.
