Man charged with attempted murder in Kingsport stabbing

Jeremiah Byington

A Kingsport man has been charged with attempted second-degree murder after allegedly pursuing his wife to the home of a friend during a domestic dispute, then stabbing her acquaintance three times in the driveway.

Shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday, the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office was alerted to the incident at 180 Derby Drive, Kingsport. The resident, Sam Ireson, 23, was located with stab wounds and identified Jeremiah Byington as his attacker.

SCSO Public Information Officer Leslie Earhart says Byington, 28, of nearby 261 Hialeah Drive, had fled in a car before police arrived at the scene. He's alleged to have driven to the home of a family member in Washington County, Tenn., then walked to a convenience store.

Earhart says Byington called authorities from the store and awaited the response of the Washington County Sheriff's Office. He was then taken into custody and turned over to the SCSO.

Ireson was transported to Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport. On Wednesday morning, Wellmont spokesperson Jim Wozniak said Ireson had been treated and released.

An arrest report on the incident says the suspect's wife, Ceaira Byington, 23, had gone to Ireson's home after an argument with her husband. When Jeremiah Byington arrived a short time later, Ireson confronted him in the driveway, telling him to leave.

Byington reportedly ignored Ireson's demand and entered his wife's car. When Ireson repeated that he needed to leave, Byington allegedly pulled a knife, sparking a fight between the two men.

The victim told police that during the struggle that left him with the stab wounds, Byington said he was going to kill him.

Byington is currently held in the Sullivan County jail in Blountville.
