KINGSPORT — The local racing community is mourning the death Sunday of longtime local driver Tony Ward, who died early Sunday morning following a sudden illness.
Ward, 49, of Kingsport, drove the familiar blue No. 7 Chevy, and was a favorite in the Street Stock division at Kingsport Speedway. He was also a familiar face at Lonesome Pine Raceway in Coeburn, Va.
Kingsport Speedway general manager Robert Pressley said, "Our hearts are heavy today to learn of the passing of Tony Ward Street Stock competitor. Tony has been a long time supporter of the speedway along with his wife Kellye who use to work at he speedway in the past. He will truly be missed by his racing family. God Speed Tony. Kellye and family our prayers are with you."
Ward had competed in all 10 Kingsport Speedway Street Stock division races thus far in 2013. He finished ninth in his final race Friday night and was sitting sixth in the season point standings.
