KINGSPORT — Johnson City’s Zeke Shell was the class of the field at Kingsport Speedway on Friday night.

Shell led wire to wire in the 60-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model feature to pick up his third victory of the season in the Model City.

Shell started on the outside of the front row and took off like he was shot out of a cannon when the green flag fell to start the race. It was all smooth sailing from there for Shell, who stayed well ahead of his competition the rest of the way.

While Shell cruised, Daniel Pope, who entered the race as the points leader, suffered a bad break. Pope’s engine failed on lap 25, tagging him with his first DNF of the season.

Ronnie McCarty of Kingsport finished second behind Shell while Chad Finchum, Paul Nogradi Jr. and Kres VanDyke rounded out the top five.

In the 30-lap Street Stock feature, Nick Cole worked his way to the front and cruised to his fifth win of the season ahead of runner-up Jason Leatherwood. Royce Peters, Rob Austin and Chris Tunnell completed the top five.

It’s been a feast or famine sort of season for Kenny Absher in the Pure 4 division. Entering last week’s race, Absher had five top-five finishes to his credit and four DNFs with nothing in between.

Last Friday, Absher broke through to claim his first Pure 4 victory of the season, holding off John Ketron, Jason Ketron, Chris Neeley and Dylan Bates.

In other action, Jacob Owens and Derek Lane each won a 10-lap Legends race, and Bruce Crumbley won the Rookie Pure 4 race. Mook Jeter finished fourth.
