Family gospel groups featured at 93rd convention

The New Harvest Brothers will perform at the 93rd Big Stone Gap Tri State Singing Convention on Saturday.

BIG STONE GAP, Va. — The gospel music that has dominated central Appalachia since the Great Revival of the 19th century will be celebrated on Saturday at the 93rd Big Stone Gap Tri State Singing Convention.

The convention, which will feature family gospel groups, will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday at the outdoor theater that stages “The Trail of the Lonesome Pine,” which is marking its 50th season this year.

Although the Tri State Singing Convention is no longer an all-day event, the spirit and intent of the event has not changed from its frontier spirit of the Great Revival.

The convention is a community celebration, worship and ministry through gospel music, sung by people who truly love and respect this American musical forms.

In 1800, the Great Revival started a religious fervor in central Appalachia that has never burned out. That fervor still displays itself in the number of small churches that exist in central Appalachia and in the fact that the most prevalent style of music is still gospel music.

While bluegrass may be viewed as the popular music of Appalachia, it is gospel music that continues to dominate the cultural expression, and the number of gospel groups that exist today outweighs any other style of music.

The Big Stone Gap Singing Convention is the oldest event of its kind in the country, and this 93rd year is a good sign that the convention may well reach 100 years and surpass that.

Though the event has undergone changes, the dedication to presenting the best in gospel music remains, shown this year through the presentation of family gospel groups.

The schedule for the 93rd Singing Convention is:

5 p.m.  — Jim Gates and the Key Keepers.

5:40 p.m. — The Jackson Family.

6:20 p.m. — Glimpse of Grace.

7 p.m. — The New Harvest Brothers.

7:40 p.m. — The Poff Family.

8:10 p.m. — Highly Favoured.
