Former Gate City baseball coach indicted for firing weapon inside home

GATE CITY — A former Gate City High School baseball coach who allegedly fired a shotgun inside the bedroom of an occupied home was indicted Thursday by a Scott County grand jury.

Shannon Mark Carter, 36, of Gate City, is charged with a single count of intentionally discharging a weapon inside a dwelling occupied by one or more people in a manner that would endanger their lives.

Virginia State Police reports show Carter was arrested at his home on the night of Dec. 23, 2012, following an alleged domestic dispute.

Witnesses reportedly told the responding officer that Carter fired a .410 shotgun into a TV stand in the home's master bedroom. Both witnesses were reportedly in the residence when the gun was allegedly fired.

Carter previously served as the head coach for Gate City High School baseball team and was employed as a teacher in the Scott County School System. He was relieved from both positions in 2010 following a domestic dispute that occurred in 2009. Those charges were later dropped.
