EUGENE, Ore. — Virginia Tech's Tomas Kruzliak won the hammer title with a throw of 227 feet, 3 inches on Thursday in the NCAA track and field championships at Hayward Field.
The freshman from Nitra, Slovakia, also won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship and held the nation's top throw of 232-5 entering the NCAA preliminary meets. Kruzliak was the No. 2 seed going into the NCAA finals.
He was named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Southeast Region Field Athlete of the Year earlier this month. Before joining the Hokies, Kruzliak won three Slovakian junior national titles and three youth national championships.
