Former Knox County Criminal Court judge Richard Baumgartner. ( J. MILES CARY/NEWS SENTINEL )
Richard Baumgartner, the ex-Knox County Criminal Court judge disgraced by drug use on the bench, began serving his six-month prison sentence this week for lying to investigators.
Baumgartner, 66, reported Wednesday to the work camp at Gilmer medium-security federal prison in Glenville, W. Va., said his lawyer, Don Bosch. The camp has no walls or guardtowers.
“He was immediately put in the camp and is doing well,” Bosch said. “He will be assigned a job within the week.”
Baumgartner served as judge for nearly 20 years until he came under scrutiny by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in 2010 for buying painkillers from a felon on probation in his court.
