Burton blitzes Hurley in Region D baseball

NORTON — The Region D, Division 1 baseball playoff game between host J.I Burton and Hurley began smoothly but ended with both teams leaving the ballpark with a bad taste in their mouths.

The Raiders pounded out 17 hits en route to a 26-7, seven-inning win over the Rebels on Tuesday.

“We should have been out of here in five innings. It got out of hand and it was not good for either team,” said Burton coach Jimbo Adams.

After a slow first inning in which Burton plated only one run, the dam opened quickly and there were not enough fingers to fill the cracks.

The Raiders put up innings of seven and eight runs in a game that normally would have ended after five.

“The regional presidents said that if both managers agreed, we would abide by the slaughter rule. We both agreed, but the umpires were instructed that the games had to be complete,” Adams noted.

“Baseball is a game of integrity and this was not good for the game.”

Malik Miles led the Raiders by going 3-for-4,  lacking only a home run to complete the cycle. He also scored three runs and added an RBI.

Will Cassell was 3-for-6 with four RBIs and scored three runs, and  Zak Adams recorded three RBIs for the Raiders. Adams also was hit by pitches three times.

Burton advanced to Thursday’s tournament semifinals at Lebanon High School to face off against Haysi.

Haysi eliminated Twin Valley 14-1 on Tuesday.

Tyler Stacy accounted for two of Hurley’s four hits and scored two runs.
