Bucs ace Doane semifinalist for USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award

ETSU RHP Kerry Doane

DURHAM, N.C. — East Tennessee State ace Kerry Doane is among the 30 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award, USA Baseball announced Tuesday.

The award, in its 36th year, goes to the nation’s top amateur baseball player.

Doane, a senior right-hander who was named the Atlantic Sun Conference pitcher of the year, leads the nation in complete games with 12. He is 13-1 with a 1.99 ERA in 19 appearances (16 starts) this season.

“This is yet another great honor for Kerry. He has displayed what it means to be a true competitor and what it means to have the heart of a warrior,” Bucs coach Tony Skole said in a statement. “What Kerry has accomplished this year is truly amazing and I don’t know if I will ever witness another season like the one he has had.

“What makes his individual accomplishments so special is the fact that he is such a great teammate and such a humble young man.”

Doane and the Buccaneers begin play in the NCAA regionals on Friday against Vanderbilt in Nashville.

USA Baseball officials narrowed the list to 30 semifinalists. Now, a ballot featuring their names and accomplishments goes to a group of more than 220 voters, who will select the three finalists and the eventual winner.
