Pope drives to Victory Lane at Kingsport

KINGSPORT — Daniel Pope is usually among the front-runners in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model division at Kingsport Speedway.

On Friday night, he finally notched his first victory of the season.

Pope outdueled Paul Nogradi Jr. to take the lead, and he survived a late-race restart to hold on to it en route to a win Pope felt was long overdue given his performance this year.

“If you’d told me at the beginning of the season it would take us until the ninth race to get our first win, no way would I have believed that,” Pope said. “We’ve had a good car each race this season, and with just a little bit of luck I feel we should’ve already won at least a couple of races.

“Our goal is to win the Kingsport Speedway NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championship, and you’ve got to make each race count and be running when the checkered flag waves.”

Nogradi held on to finish second, and Kres VanDyke came home third. Polesitter Zeke Shell was relegated to the third row when the field was inverted, but he managed to fight back for a fourth-place result. Chad Finchum rounded out the top five.

In Street Stock, Nick Cole brought out the first caution by spinning his car, but by the end of the 30-lap feature, he was clutching the checkered flag.

Cole worked his way back through the field and made the pass for the lead on lap 26. He survived a restart with three laps remaining to secure his fourth division win of the season.

Jared Broadbent, John Harrell, Royce Peters and Rob Austin completed the top five.

In other action, points leader John Ketron strengthened his hold on the Pure 4 division by scoring his fourth win of the year, and Brandon Sutherland won the Rookie Pure 4 race.

Jacob Owens captured the win in the Legends division by holding off Trey Lane.
