Program for the Arts announces its Summer Camp Schedule in Jonesborough. Registration
for summer camps will take place at the newly renovated McKinney Center,
located at the old Booker T. Washington School, 103 Franklin Avenue,
The center will be open for summer
camp registration Thursday, May 30, from 4-6 p.m., and Saturday,
June 1, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Students can also register by downloading a
registration form online or requesting a form from email@example.com.
Conservatories begin with The
Drifting Theatre Tots Camp, June 3-7, for ages two to seven. Take some time to
bond with your little one while improving self-expression, coordination,
creativity, teamwork and more. Experienced and caring theatre professionals
will utilize theatre games and activities to build self-confidence. At the end
of the camp, students will have the opportunity to perform on a real theatre
stage for their family and friends. Theatre Tots will be taught by
award-winning director Alaska Reece Vance. Classes will be offered Monday
through Friday from 8 to 10 a.m. with a performance in the evening on June 7.
Cost is $90 per child and family member with a discounted rate of $10 for
The Musical Theatre Conservatory will take place June 10 – 22, for children in
kindergarten to 12th grade. Students will spend two weeks with their pure imagination, creating the musical Willy Wonka Junior under the
consultation of talented directors, teachers and choreographers. Students will
immerse themselves into an intensive training in musical theatre involving
dancing, singing and acting, as they learn skills needed to become a “triple
threat” onstage. Students will also design costumes, build and paint stage
scenery and props, meet new friends and grow as artists together. All grades
will work and perform together. However, we are offering half days for our
younger Kindergarten to 2nd grade campers. Classes will take place the first
week Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for grades 3rd to 12th, Monday
through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for children in kindergarten to 2nd
grade and Thursday through Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. for children in kindergarten
to 2nd grade. The second week, the schedule will be altered slightly to meet
the needs of technical rehearsals. Performances will take place all day on June
21 and 22. Cost: is $200 for 3rd to 12th grades and $150 kindergarten to 2nd
The USO Boot Camp will take place June 13 through 15 for 3rd to 12th grades.
This musical theatre camp for JRT's up and coming USO recruits encourages
students to study music, dance and costuming styles of the 1940s, as they get a
chance to perform music and dance numbers from the show. Classes are June 13
& 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. with performances on the evening of June 14 the morning of June 15. Cost is $75.
The Art Trek Camp will take place June 24 through 28 for grades 1st to 6th from
9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m. for grades 7th to 12th. Students will stamp
their passports and explore the colorful diversity of the world through art
projects from many cultures. Taught by professional local art instructors,
classes will incorporate a broad range of techniques and media, discovering each
culture’s rich visual traditions. First to 6th grade students will create works
from Native North America (Pueblo pottery), Asia (Sumi-e ink paintings and
shadow puppets), Africa (Andrinka printmaking on fabric), Mexico (wooden
animalito sculptures) and Australia (Aboriginal Dreaming dot paintings). Grades
7th to 12th will focus on murals. For both the beginner and advanced artist,
students will also learn about world customs and celebrations, making the week
a wonderful experience for both beginning and experienced young artists. Cost
is $100 with supplies included.
The Summer Actor Training Program (SATP) of The Drifting Theatre will take
place July 8 through 20 for grades 3rd to 12th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For the
past six years, The Drifting Theatre has brought professional theatre artists
from all over the country to the Tri-Cities to teach and mentor young actors.
During The Drifting Theatre's SATP, students will work on honing their acting
and performance skills. This challenging and fun program provides an
environment where both the seasoned actor and the stage-shy newcomer can
blossom. During the program, students will have the chance to participate in a
variety of classes including Acting, Stage Combat, Theatre Movement,
Improvisation, Theatre Games, Dance Choreography, Flag Twirling, Auditioning,
Monologue Coaching and more. The training program will culminate with a student
production of the exciting, avant-garde play I Am Angel. Performances will be take
place all day on July 19 & 20. Cost is $175.
A Stage Hands Conservatory will take place July 22 through July 27 at
Jonesborough Repertory Theatre from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for 6th graders to adults.
Created in 2008, Stage Hands is a performance style that calls actors to create
a play using simultaneous spoken English and American Sign Language (ASL) when
communicating dialogue. This camp will enhance students’ skills in storytelling
and theatre arts through a variety of techniques using body language, movement,
expression and ASL. Students do not have to be familiar with ASL to register.
The goal of Stage Hands is to introduce hearing audiences to the beauty of ASL
and Deaf culture. The training program will culminate with a student production
of Jack and the Beanstalk. Performances will take place all day on July 26 & 27. Cost is $100.
The summer conservatories end with the popular Shrek the Musical Workshop on
July 30 & 31 for 6th graders to adults. Students will journey into the
making of Shrek the Musical while studying with professional directors and
theatre artists. Students will learn what it takes to bring a hit Broadway
musical to the stage of the Jonesborough Theatre. Behind the scenes work for
the regional premier of Shrek The Musical will include lighting, sound, scenic
design, props, costumes, puppetry and more. Cost is $75.
