Bucs' Doane named A-Sun pitcher of year

DeLAND, Fla. — An NCAA-best 11 complete games, 12-1 record, 2.07 ERA, pitcher of the year.

Kerry Doane became East Tennessee State's first Atlantic Sun Conference pitcher of the year and was a unanimous first-team all-conference pick when the league announced its baseball awards Tuesday.

The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native was one of five Buccaneers to make the honorary A-Sun teams, joined by Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough), Andrew Green (Powell), Jeremy Taylor (Fayetteville, Ga.) and Kevin Phillips (St. Louis, Mo.). Freeman was named second team all-conference as a first baseman and Green was a second-teamer as an outfielder. Taylor and Phillips landed all-freshman team accolades. Taylor was one of seven unanimous players on the list.

Doane made the move to full-time starting pitcher in 2013. The senior is tied for second in the NCAA in wins and led all NCAA hurlers in innings pitched (122) and shutouts (four), tying the ETSU single-season records for shutouts and complete games. Doane was 8-1 with a 2.37 ERA in nine starts against conference opponents and closed out the season with nine straight wins.

Freeman started all 54 games and reached base safely in 48 of them. He ranks 25th nationally in total bases (130), 31st in RBIs (55), 48th in slugging percentage (.605), 49th in doubles (18) and 49th in home runs (10). Among A-Sun players, the junior leads in slugging percentage, ranks second in home runs, is tied for second in RBIs and doubles, ranks third in triples, is fifth in batting average (.344) and is seventh in hits (74).

Also ETSU’s closer, Freeman went 4-0 with a 0.50 ERA and eight saves in 20 relief appearances.

Mercer’s Chesny Young, last season’s freshman of the year, took home player of the year honors. Stetson’s Patrick Mazeika was tabbed freshman of the year. Craig Gibson, who guided Mercer to 42-14 overall and 20-7 records in A-Sun play, was named coach of the year.

The Bucs open play in the Atlantic Sun tournament Wednesday at 10 a.m. against Stetson at Melching Field.
