Relish Cooking Show coming to Kingsport

Chef Brian Morris is a Nashville native, so he’s especially excited about the Kingsport show and says he’d 'rather be in Tennessee than anywhere else.'

Morris guarantees that the Relish Magazine Cooking Show will be “a riot” when
his culinary crew rolls into Kingsport on May 23.


“It is the most
fun they are going to have at a cooking show,” Morris said. “It’s really like a
night out, not a school or class. It’s perfect for families, date night or a
girls’ night.”


And men
definitely shouldn’t skip out on the fun. Morris says his show is very
“guy-friendly.” He’ll need to see some men in the crowd when it comes time for
selecting the lucky lads who will help him cook on stage. But don’t worry guys,
Morris chooses fun over fancy in his “Back to Basics” show.


“The show is all
about bringing Relish Magazine to life,” he said. “There’s a lot of music and
audience interaction and fun. This year’s show is all about making food fun.”


In preparation
for “Back to Basics,” Morris dug through his culinary bag of tricks to find the
best tips that people can use in everyday meal preparation.


“We’ve found
over the years there’s a lot of fundamentals that folks never really master,”
he said. “The more confident you are in the kitchen, the more fun you will
have.”


And since the
show is geared toward teaching, it’s a sure bet that food fans won’t be
disappointed by the two-hour show at the Toy F. Reid Employee Center, 400 South
Wilcox Drive. Some of the day-to-day cooking skills Morris promises to teach
include perfect stir fry and fish, plus oven-roasted chicken.


Perfect poaching
will also be a hot topic.


“We’re going to
turn the notion of green beans upside down,” Morris said. “We’re looking for
more of a snap, a tender crisp. But we won’t go too far from Southern
tradition.”


The Relish
Cooking Show isn’t centered on recipes. In fact, Morris loosely follows the
ingredient instructions. He’s more concerned about “putting tools in the
culinary belt” that people can use for years to come. 


Morris is a
Nashville native so he’s especially excited about the Kingsport show and says
he’d “rather be in Tennessee than anywhere else.” He studied finance at the
University of Tennessee while cooking in restaurants to pay the bills. It
wasn’t long before cooking became an obsession and Morris found himself living
in New York City and attending The French Culinary Institute.


He was raised by
professional musicians and says that’s why there’s so much spunk and soul in
his show.  Recipe and teaching videos
hosted by Morris on www.relish.com prove that he’s a fabulous entertainer.


“It’s all about
the delivery,” Morris said. “When you perform music you know how it makes them
feel and when you cook you know right away how the taste of the food makes them
feel.”


Relish Magazine
appears in this newspaper once per month. Each issue celebrates America’s love
of food by offering colorful stories on cooking, dining and entertaining. 


“We’re all about
everyday approachable food for real people,” Morris said.


The Relish
Magazine Cooking Show is Thursday, May 23, and begins at 7 p.m. at the Toy F.
Reid Employee Center in Kingsport. Tickets are available in advance at the
Kingsport Times-News, Johnson City Press and the Herald & Tribune in
Jonesborough. General admission tickets are $5 each and $10 at the door. VIP
