BIG STONE GAP — Mountain Empire Community College is currently accepting applications for the 9th annual Mountain Music School to be held on campus July 22-26.

The college’s Mountain Music School is dedicated to the preservation and continuation of Appalachian music and cultural heritage. There will also be a string band class for intermediate and advanced musicians. Students who do not have an instrument will be provided one for the week at no cost.

This year’s Mountain Music School will feature several workshops to include mountain dance, harmony singing and voice. Students will also be treated to class visits and afternoon performances by master musicians.

Faculty for this year’s Mountain Music School will include well-known local musicians Todd Meade, Rhodyjane Meadows, Anndrena Belcher, Chris Rose, Tyler Hughes, Cory Brown, Steve Souther, Dexter Ramey, Larry Mullins, Kathy Qualls, Oscar Harris, Anna Ruth Wells, Jack Stanley and others.

“We are excited about our 9th annual Mountain Music School and look forward to a great week with students of all ages. In addition to the many instrument classes, we are adding some exciting workshops to the schedule,” said Sue Ella Boatright-Wells, MECC’s dean of work force development.

Registration for Mountain Music School is $150. Lunch is provided each day and students will receive a T-shirt. Classes will be from 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. each day of the school. Scholarships are available for students 18 years and younger.
