Charles Edward Burke, 57
GATE CITY — A Duffield man is in police custody after he allegedly admitted to raping a child, Scott County authorities said Wednesday.
The suspect, Charles Edward Burke, 57, 382 Justice Lane, Duffield, was arrested Monday on a single count of rape of a child under 18 years old.
According to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Burke confessed to raping the minor after being interviewed by Lt. Chris Holder of the office’s criminal investigations division.
During the interview with Burke, Holder reportedly collected evidence related to the alleged rape, including DNA from the suspect.
Burke was taken into custody Monday night following the interview.
Due to the nature of the case, authorities declined to reveal the alleged victim’s gender or exact age. Authorities also declined to comment on the alleged victim’s relationship, if any, with Burke.
The Scott County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office also declined to comment on the case due to the fact it involved a minor being sexually abused.
Burke was arraigned Wednesday in Scott County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. He is currently being held without bond in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield.
