HARDEESVILLE, S.C. — Cumberland University erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and eliminated the Virginia Intermont softball team from NAIA play with a 10-3 victory Tuesday at the Gray Sports Complex.
The Lady Cobras (36-14) held a 3-2 lead entering the bottom of the sixth before committing four errors that aided the Lebanon, Tenn., school’s offensive explosion.
The Bulldogs, who also committed four errors, outhit VI 13-7.
Micalah Sacre went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, her 14th of the year, and two runs scored to lead the Lady Cobras.
Natalie Garcia, Kacy Hobbs and Jessica Roper homered for Cumberland, which advanced to a second elimination game later Tuesday against Spring Hill.
Spring Hill shut down the Bulldogs 6-0 in Tuesday's nightcap, advancing to take on host USC Beaufort on Wednesday to determine which team advances to the NAIA national championship May 24-30 in Columbus, Ga.
