HARDEEVILLE, S.C. — Four errors by the Virginia Intermont softball team opened the floodgates for Spring Hill (Ala.) College, which took a 10-0, five-inning victory Monday in the NAIA USC Beaufort bracket at Gray Athletic Complex.
Five of the 15th-ranked Badgers’ 10 runs were unearned. Katelyn Hinson went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run. Martha Partman also drove in three runs for Spring Hill, finishing 2-for-3 with four runs scored.
The Lady Cobras managed just two hits — one each by Micalah Sacre and Krystle Brenneman — against Spring Hill’s Carolina Sagrera. Sagrera struck out 11 and walked none.
The Badgers ended VI’s six-game winning streak. The Lady Cobras fell into Tuesday’s 2 p.m. elimination game, where they’ll play Cumberland (Tenn.) University.
Bracket top seed USC Beaufort routed Cumberland 13-5 in Monday's second game, which was shortened to six innings. The host Sand Sharks and Badgers play Tuesday at noon.
The NAIA opening round runs through Wednesday and features four-team, double-elimination tournaments at 10 different sites. The winners from each site travel to Columbus, Ga., for the national championship, which is a double-elimination event set for May 24-30.
