50 years ago, civil-rights pioneer’s arrest created iconic Knoxville image

She can still remember the dress, a black-and-white gingham her mother bought her. It wasn’t her very favorite, but it was one she knew looked good. After all, she was representing her race — and what if she appeared on television for a fleeting second? 

But she put that dress on also knowing there was a chance it could end up torn or dirty if she got dragged away.

That evening — May 10, 1963 — Mariea Wooding, 18, marched from Knoxville College to the Tennessee Theatre in downtown Knoxville with other black students, ostensibly to watch “Where the Boys Are,” a comedy about four Midwestern college co-eds who spend spring break in Fort Lauderdale.
