BIG STONE GAP — Mountain Empire Older Citizens’ major fundraiser for its Emergency Fuel Fund for the Elderly has been rescheduled to May 19. Inclement weather prompted the rain date from Sunday.
The new date will begin at 2 p.m. at Union High School in Big Stone Gap. Registration will begin at 1 p.m.
Walkers who may have a conflict with the new date of May 19 can walk at area tracks, gyms or anywhere they like and bring donations to the MEOC office in Big Stone Gap. New walkers are welcome and all walkers should feel free to collect more pledges during the two week delay.
This year’s goal is $165,000 to assist older people in Lee, Wise and Scott counties and the city of Norton with emergency home heating situations during the winter months. The fund assists residents aged 60 or older.
The walkathon is a safe route for people of all ages, taking place on the paved road connecting the high school and Powell Valley Primary School. There are no major grades and walkers complete the walk at their own pace, and as much of the walk as they wish or can.
A celebration picnic will be held immediately following the walkathon and everyone who raises at least $100 is awarded an official T-shirt. For more information about how to get involved in this year’s event contact MEOC at (276) 523-4202 or (800) 252-6362.
