Barter Players’ ‘Cat in the Hat’ jumps onto stage
From the moment his tall, red-and-white-striped hat appears around the door, Sally and her brother know that the Cat in the Hat is the most mischievous feline they’ve ever met.
With the trickiest of tricks and the craziest of ideas, he is certainly fun to play with — and he can turn a rainy afternoon into an amazing adventure — but when the Cat releases Thing One and Thing Two from his box of tricks, havoc ensues, leaving the children to wonder whatever to do.
Fans of the classic Dr. Seuss story will see all of their favorite moments from the book spring to life on stage during The Barter Players’ production of “The Cat in the Hat,” running in repertory on Barter Theatre’s main stage through May 25.
Tickets to the show, which will include three Saturday performances, are $12. Group rates are available.
Millions of copies of “The Cat in the Hat” have been sold since it was first published in 1957. Seuss’s cat tale has been the subject of several animated musical television specials through the years, and the film adaptation of the book was released in 2003, starring Mike Myers in the title role of the Cat in the Hat.
Susan Boulle directs The Barter Players’ stage version of “The Cat in the Hat,” which stars Micah Hein as the Cat; Emily Grove as Sally; Barret Guyton as Boy; Patrice Foster as Fish; Kristy Bissell as Thing 1; and Sam McCalla as Thing 2.
“Kids love the wild imagination of Dr. Seuss and his sense of fun, and so do we. It’s a perfect fit,” said Katy Brown, artistic director of The Barter Players.
A special division of Barter Theatre, The Barter Players is an acting company dedicated to young audiences. Most performances are less than an hour in length. One of the troupe’s biggest goals is to connect young people (and adults) with great stories through creative theatre that never talks down to anyone.
“Dr. Seuss is the epitome of all the elements of our mission,” Brown said. “He is one of the most creative, most inclusive, most exciting storytellers that I can think of in all of literature.”
On The Barter Players’ production calendar for summer are “The Pied Piper of Hamelin,” opening May 28; “Cinderella,” opening June 25; and “Mother Goose: The Musical,” opening July 24. This fall, The Barter Players will present “Little House on the Prairie,” playing Sept. 25-Nov. 19, followed by “Twas the Night before Christmas,” set to run Dec. 3-19.
