On the third Sunday of the month you can still hear a centuries old musical tradition at the Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area in Elizabethton, shape note singing. Shape note singing was an effort to make music accessible to non-musicians for church and community gatherings. "We track our shape note heritage back to the early 1800's in New England" said Don Wiley of the Old Fields Singers. "People invented a sight system where in each note, rather than being round like in conventional music notation, got a unique shape to correspond with a tone of the scale."?
