BLUFF CITY — The Sullivan East baseball team put the hammer down all season, and it got the Patriots a school record.
The Bluff City Bombers broke the East mark for home runs in a season by reaching 40 in Tuesday’s 28-2, five-inning victory over Cloudland.
The Patriots eclipsed the previous record of 37, which was set in 1995.
Jordan Jackson belted three round-trippers, including a grand slam in the third, and drove in nine total runs against the Highlanders.
Ryan Flick also belted a grand slam for his 15th dinger of the year, tying the school record for most in a season set by Greg Bentley in 1986 — one day after topping Bentley’s mark for career homers. It was career homer No. 27 for Flick.
Tanner Whittaker (1-0) notched the shortened no-hitter and Spencer Nave went 4-for-4 for East (17-10), which started the season 2-8 before winning 15 of its last 17 games. Whittaker struck out eight and walked 10.
The Patriots play Johnson County on Friday in the District 1-AA tournament.
