KINGSPORT — A three-run rally in the top of the ninth propelled eighth-seeded Montreat to a 5-4 victory over No. 9 seed Point on Monday in the Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball tournament play-in game at Hunter Wright Stadium.
The victory moved Montreat (24-24) into the eight-team, double-elimination field. The loss ended the season for Point (22-31).
The Cavaliers face top-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Chris Martin belted a three-run homer in the third inning for Point. Lance Gower smacked a three-RBI, go-ahead triple for Montreat in the top of the ninth.
Tuesday’s pairings have No. 4 seed Milligan and No. 5 Reinhardt facing off at 11 a.m., followed by No. 3 St. Andrews vs. No. 6 Virginia Intermont at 1:30 p.m., No. 2 Union vs. No. 7 Bryan at 5 p.m. and top-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan vs. Montreat in the nightcap.
