KINGSPORT — Georgetown College scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 15th inning to end the fourth-longest game in NAIA history, beating Virginia-Wise 6-5 in a Mid-South Conference softball tournament elimination game Monday at Domtar Park.
Kristina Romualdo went 4-for-7 with two RBIs to lead the Lady Highland Cavaliers (31-21), whose season came to an end.
Rachel Hawks took the loss inside the circle, going the distance and reaching 229 on the pitch count. The right-hander allowed 15 hits in her 14 2-3 innings, striking out five, walking two and allowing just two earned runs.
Monday’s test of endurance brought Hawks’ season total to more than 200 innings — the most in a single season by any Cavs player.
Eight players finished with multiple hits and 10 players had seven at-bats in the game. The schools combined to strand 27 baserunners.
The game is the longest on record for Virginia-Wise and the second-longest game in Mid-South history.
